When I give my presentation skills seminars, I put a massive emphasis on finding your authentic voice — because guess what — people connect with real people. I want to hear the girl who speaks passionately about something just as she would to a good friend, not the girl putting on a performance for her audience.

Your audience will forgive you if you’re nervous, or if you lost your wording — but they won’t if they sense you’re faking it.

Yes, there is significance in bringing polish to your speaking game, but that’s not what builds trust and connection with your audience. It’s not what breaks down barriers and humanizes you.

What does win audiences over though is when you know your material, when you’re passionate, and when you’re authentically you — so speak like yourself.

Quick Tips on How to Manage Nerves Before a Presentation

That feeling leading up to a presentation can be daunting, anxiety-ridden, and straight-up overwhelming. We can feel uptight, anxious – and completely uncentered.  Thankfully, there are a variety of ways to help calm and ease these feelings of fear. I’ve listed some tips below.

1.       Deep Breaths. This is a pretty standard one, but big, deep breaths definitely help. Calm your mind by focusing on your breath. When you exhale, imagine that you’re releasing that pit in your chest or stomach. You want to be loose, not uptight – and this technique helps with just that!

2.       Get Physical. Push-ups, a quick, brisk walk around the room/venue, or a few jumping jacks can all help. Getting physical forces you to think about the physical activity at hand, gets you out of your own head, and most importantly, releases endorphins which trigger positive feelings in your body.

3.       Practice. Unfortunately, this isn’t something you can do immediately before a presentation, so make sure you know your stuff before the day of your speaking engagement.  The more we know something, the less fearful we are of the outcome because we know what to expect.

4.       Positive Visualization. “Stop thinking about what could go wrong and get excited about what could go right” – Tony Robbins. If you start thinking about best case scenario’s (as opposed to worst-case), you’ll start generating excitement. Remember, you probably have something really good to say, so think of some best-case scenario’s for how you’ll be received during and after your presentation, (like 3 or 4 people telling you how awesome your presentation was).

5.       Re-Frame. I believe that when we get nervous before a presentation, it’s just our mind’s way of trying to protect us from potential criticism or judgement. We get into a sort of survival mode - which is why we feel scared. So just tell yourself that - that your brain is just trying to protect you from potential “danger”. Simply understanding this and putting a name to the fear makes the nerves way more manageable.

6.       Think About Your Topic. Focus your attention on why you like the subject you’re about to speak on. Think about 1 or 2 things that you really like about your topic. This should help bring you calm and clarity, because it focuses your attention on the fact that you’ll be speaking about something that you a) know about, and b) enjoy.

Practice using any or all of these tips. Use the one’s that resonate with you and scrap the ones that don’t. I hope this helps, and good luck presenting!

Get excited to help your audience. You should be eager to tell them what you know! Why? Because you know how damn helpful or interesting your presentation will be to them.

Delivery

You're talking to other human beings (I'd hope). Speak to your audience as you would to a close friend or family member - and make sure it's coming from a place that you feel absoultely certain about.

Message

Get straight to the goods. What's relevant to your audience?  And what can you say that will be interesting and simple enough for them to remember and act on?

Build Rapport Instantly: A Step by Step Guide to Remembering a Person's Name

Imagine this.

You meet someone briefly at a party - you shake hands, quickly exchange pleasantries and move on with your evening. 

Imagine seeing that same person two months later at a restaurant - they call you by your name, and tell you it was nice meeting you at that party last month.  What would you think?

You may feel really good that the person remembered who you were. You may be impressed or surprised. You may even feel a little bad that you didn't remember their name. Despite how you feel, this person has displayed that they cared enough to remember who you were, and you're now engaged in the interaction.

When we sense that people care - a rapport starts taking place - and that's when most conversations of substance start happening.

In a sales setting, remembering and recalling a person's name can be a powerful tool to establishing the rapport and trust necessary to open those important conversations.

Follow the steps below for a breakdown on how to remember a person's name.

Step 1:  Change your attitude.  

Part of the reason why a person doesn't remember someone's name is because they simply think they can’tA lot of people have an “I’m not good with name’s, I’m better with faces”, or some variation of that, attitude.  Simply saying, “I’m going to remember more people’s name’s” is a much better attitude, because you’re setting yourself up for success. 

Step 1a: Recognize that it takes effort.

Ask yourself, have I ever really tried to remember a name?  Like put any effort into it?  Maybe, maybe not.  Guess what?  Once you understand that all you need to do is try, just a bit, you’ll be way more successful. 

Step 2:  Have a WHY.  

Like anything else we do, there’s a motive behind our actions. Why should we put effort into something if there’s no benefit to us or anyone else? True. So, understand why remembering a person's name is important to you. Pick a reason. Keep it simple. My personal why is because I know it’s something that other people genuinely appreciate. 

A few other examples may be -- because you want to make a good impression on a client, because you don't want to look stupid in a meeting, because you want to prove to yourself you can, because you want to put a smile on someone's face, because you want to keep more people engaged, because you want to ask someone for a favour, etc.

Step 3: Be Present.

This is everything. Make a conscious effort to completely clear your head and get into the moment. Listen to the person. Look at the person. When they say their name, take it in immediately. 

A side note. Thoughts of tonight’s dinner, the intimidating dude in the corner, or an episode of The Bachelor Canada should not be in your head. Remembering a person’s name is the most important thing in your world right then and there. 

Step 4: Say their name back to them.

For example – they say, hey I’m Jimmy – you say, nice to meet you, Jimmy.  Or you can respond –Jimmy... good to meet you, thanks for coming out.  It’s up to you how to respond, just make sure to incorporate their name in your response.

If you were distracted or unsure that you heard them correctly – you can ask – it was Jimmy, right?  

If the person has a name you’ve never heard of, or was difficult to understand, ask them if they mind repeating it.  If you still can’t make out the name, ask them to kindly spell it out. J-I-M-M-Y. Then repeat their name back to them. There’s no shame in doing this, because you’re showing that remembering their name is important to you. 

Step 5: Repeat their name in your head. 

Once the introduction is over, look at them, take in their face (or something that they’re wearing), and repeat their name in your head two or three times. Jimmy. That’s Jimmy.  Cool, got it.  Remember, you are still present during this part.

I'm telling you, remembering a person's name is a game changer.  The better we  communicate, the more value we bring to people's lives.

Develop a Presentation Mindset that Gets You More Business: 4 Simple Steps

Wouldn't it be great if we could go into every presentation confident, comfortable and ready to kick some a$$?  Wouldn't it be amazing if that kind of thinking guaranteed more success almost every time?

Well, it's possible, and I'll tell you how.

Passion. It's about developing a mindset that cultivates passion. Nothing phony - I'm talking about generating real, authentic belief and excitement about whatever it is you're speaking about.

Why?

Because passion is contagious -- literally.  Researchers refer to it as "mood contagion".  This means that when someone is speaking with excitement, the person or audience listening is much more likely to become excited themselves.  And when we have a listening, engaged and excited audience, we have an audience that is far more likely to act on your information and advice.

So, how do you develop a mindset that ignites passion?

1.      Cultivate love for your product.

We need to understand and appreciate as many things as possible about our products. Perhaps it’s something aesthetic, the simplicity of a feature, its diversity, or even its efficiency, power or size. Whatever it is, make sure you can recite all the things that you love about it.

If possible, live the hell out of your product.  Buy it, play with it, stand next to it, get to know it. The more you love your product, the more natural and easy it is to talk about - and as a result - the more influence you have on the people listening to you. 

2.      Say what you love out loud.

Practice saying the answers above, out loud. Say them with enthusiasm and meaning just as you would to a real audience. Saying this out loud helps generate belief and gets you in a mindset of certainty and excitement. When it's time to present, your message will come out more naturally and authentically.

3.      Understand how your product, service or subject helps your audience. 

This is absolutely crucial. The presentation isn't for you - it's for your audience. The more you understand how your product or service is helping the people in front of you, the more certain and excited you will be to present to them. Simple as that.

The goal here is to get excited about how your product or service helps people, and specifically, the audience in front of you.

4.      Repeat the sentence below until you believe it.

I can't wait to tell you what I know because I know it's going to be so helpful and interesting to you.

If you can say the sentence above with certainty, your mind is in the right place. 

Remember, the more excited, certain and passionate you are about your product, the more confident, comfortable a speaker you'll be, and the more influence you will have on your audience.
